Welcome to The Manistique
Community Treehouse Center
Recently awarded a National Treasure status, Jefferson Chalmers is a neighborhood located on the south eastside of Detroit. Here we are building something unique that reflects the community's future.
With the donation of labor from our neighbor and project partners, we are raising the cost of materials for our incredible vision of a safe space for our children to grow.
The Manistique Treehouse project will be a 400 square foot ADA wheelchair accessible six sided building. Over 120 feet of ramps and platforms will lead from the sidewalk up to the structure and surrounding decks. The structure will be 10 feet off of the ground. Nestled between a beautiful Maple tree and a stellar Cottonwood. Totally powered by solar energy. This will be an active community-run center for occupational therapy and education. Special programs and activities will be offered for children and teens, between the ages of 5 - 18, including children living with developmental and learning disabilities. Programming and activities will be both one-on-one and in groups. In addition to our programs we will also focus on improving concentration, health and wellness, improving/restoring confidence, setting ambitions, and building social skills. We will also offer career support for individuals with learning disabilities between the ages of 19 - 30 with their career goals and job skills. Often these individuals are forgotten after the age of 18, but they are still in need of help. The Manistique Treehouse will truly be an oasis for nurturing and growth, where the community can connect with nature and one another. We also, offer therapeutic services for families, seniors and veterans.
Some of our programs in the Treehouse will be:
1. HORTICULTURAL THERAPY
3. MENTORING SERVICES
4. GREENING AND GROWING
5. HEALTHY FOOD PREPARATION AND EDUCATION
6. CREATIVITY AND ARTS PROGRAMMING
7. SUSTAINABILITY AND GREEN TECHNOLOGY
8. PERSONAL FINANCES AND BUDGETING
To promote the diversity of individuals in our community, the mental and physical well-being of our youth, and inclusion of people of all ages and abilities. Our purpose is providing programs with a unique focus on inclusion for Persons with Disabilities, the promotion of collaboration with multicultural understanding, and diversity in the counseling process. We plan to provide a safe, creative, supportive, learning environment in this outstanding natural structure.
